What are the Benefits of Indoor Cycling?

According to the U.S. Department of Health ".....regular physical activity substantially reduces the risk of coronary disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.....and helps to control weight, contributes to healthy bones, muscles and joints... reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression..." Need we go on? Cycling is also "low-impact" without the joint stress that you get from "ground-pounding" sports and activities. All good reasons to strap-in/clip-on and RYDE!

The Keys to Success in Health and Fitness Step One: Come Build a Road With Me

-Brigid Lossing

Ryde On guy with beanie cap aloneWhenever I see a new person in one of my classes, I do everything I can to encourage that person to stay with their health and fitness plans no matter where those plans may take them. I don't do this just because it's good business for me – after all, I do want people to make RydeOn! an important part of their fitness routines. The main reason I do it, and the main reason I'm writing this post, is that I know from first-hand experience just how challenging it can be to look yourself in the mirror and decide to take control of your life.

Because that's just what a health and fitness plan is. It's a decision that says, “No matter how busy I am or how many roles I play, I am important enough to myself that my health and fitness comes first.”

That's a pretty scary decision, because if you make that decision and stick to it, you will change. For one thing, you're schedule will change because you'll be making room for regular exercise amidst all of your other responsibilities. You may find yourself stocking different foods at home – and negotiating your food choices with your family.

But do you know the scariest part of making and keeping health and fitness promises to ourselves? The fear of putting ourselves first, and the concern that, really, we don't have that much power over our own lives.

You wouldn't know it to look at me today, but the fact is that three years ago I was put in a place where I had to decide just how much control I was going to assume over my life during a time when I felt almost totally helpless. After surviving cancer once, it struck again. The first time around I felt pretty confident I'd beat it. The second time, though, every fear and every insecurity I'd ever felt was right there, looking back at me from my 200+ pound self in the mirror.

You see, I'd always known that exercise and healthy eating were good ideas in an abstract sort of way. When you come face to face with your own mortality, though, you find yourself faced with one of life's big questions – what do I want, and what am I willing to do to get it?

My answer to that question – I didn't “just” want to survive my second bout of cancer, I wanted to do everything in my power to make sure there would never be a third – it led me to change my life. It led me to my first (and second, and third, etc.) indoor cycling class.

Eventually, it led here to RydeOn!.

And now it's leading me to issue this invitation to you. Starting the first week in March and lasting for twelve weeks, Christina and I will be offering RydeOn! University, a complete program of indoor cycling classes, nutrition tips, inspiration and motivation. We're teaming up with Busch's to make it easier for you to find, buy, and make healthier meals, and we're teaming up with several other area sponsors to offer prizes to help you stay motivated.

I had to hit a major roadblock before I made the decision to change my direction and build myself another road, a road to optimum health and fitness. Let me tell you, that first indoor cycling class was not easy! Changing my diet was not easy, even with the threat of cancer hanging over my head. But brick by brick, I took control over my life and my health – and I know that you can do it, too.

During these next several weeks and beyond, Christina and I will be providing you with the materials you need to build your own road. Through this blog, our Facebook posts, our e-newsletter, a new partnership with the Saline Patch, and of course in each and every one of RydeOn!'s indoor cycling classes, we'll be sharing tips and information on exercise, nutrition, and motivation to help you get started and – most important – help you keep going.

Ultimately, we are all on our own individual roads in life. But we don't have to be alone. Let's lay down some parallel tracks and enjoy this journey together!
